Horst Rickels: Pioneer of Dutch Sound Art & Organ Acoustics

In Memoriam Horst Rickels (1947–2023) • ArtScience • Studio LOOS

The Acoustic Legacy of Horst Rickels

Horst Rickels (1947–2023) was a towering figure in Dutch and European sound art, renowned for his monumental kinetic acoustic installations, sculptural aerophones, and decades of teaching at the ArtScience Interfaculty and Royal Conservatoire in The Hague.

Throughout his artistic career, Rickels maintained an intimate collaboration with Studio LOOS, utilizing the space to test organ pipe mechanics, wind chamber dynamics, and spatial acoustics. His most celebrated masterwork, the Mercurius Wagen (an automated acoustic organ on wheels with microtonally tunable pipes and variable air pressure reservoirs), transformed spatial environments into living sound organisms.

🌬️ Pipe Organ Acoustics & Variable Air Dynamics

Rickels approached sound not merely as musical notes, but as physical air in motion. By manipulating the wind pressure feeding wooden organ pipes, he investigated how air velocity shifts acoustic pitch and generates unstable multiphonic beat frequencies (binaural and acoustic interference) within physical architectures.
