Acoustics of Reversed Audio: Attack Envelopes & Natural Decays
In natural acoustics, almost all percussion instruments and plucks (cymbals, acoustic pianos, snare drums, guitar strums) exhibit an instantaneous, explosive Attack followed by an exponential acoustic Decay and reverberant resonance.
When an audio buffer is reversed in time (\(t o -t\)), this dynamic envelope is inverted: the gradual reverberation tail swells forward in time, culminating in a sudden, sharp transient termination. This phenomenon makes reverse audio one of the most effective transitional tools in electronic music and cinematic sound design (such as the ubiquitous reverse crash swell leading into a track's drop).
