Flutter Echo, Specular Reflections & Control Room RFZ (Reflection-Free Zone)

Flutter echo is a rapid, ringing acoustic resonance created when sound bounces repeatedly between two parallel, highly reflective hard surfaces (such as drywall or bare floorboards). Clapping your hands in an untreated room produces a characteristic metallic zinging sound.

The Reflection-Free Zone (RFZ) Philosophy

Pioneered by acoustic engineers Don Davis and Peter D'Antonio, the Reflection-Free Zone concept shapes the front half of a control room so that all direct sound from the studio monitors reaches the mixing engineer's ears without being contaminated by early specular reflections occurring within the first 15–20 milliseconds.

By splaying front side walls and angling acoustic ceiling clouds, specular reflections are directed past the listening position toward the back wall, where diffusion treatment scatters the energy into a diffuse ambient tail.
